My Six Core Principles:

1. 1)  Your essays and personal statements need to grab my attention and engage me emotionally.  Make me FEEL something, whether it’s suspense, laughter, anxiety, anger, or curiosity.

1. 2)  A huge part of resonating with a listener is authenticity, and the key to authenticity is congruency.  In interviews, your body language, vocals, and content should always be in alignment, if you want to avoid looking like you’re “performing” instead of “connecting.” For the same reason, striking a balance between preparation and looking “overly fake and scripted” is equally crucial.

1. 3)  Storytelling is key.  A single well-told story can often be more memorable and more persuasive than any single fact, figure, or data point.

1. 4) Your essays should not only inform but also engage. Strive for a writing style that reflects your personality while clearly conveying your achievements, aspirations, and the insight you’ve gained through your experiences. It’s about making the admissions committee see the person behind the achievements.

1. 5)  Have a clear through-line.  Having a metaphor or a story that weaves throughout your essay or personal statement can be an incredibly powerful way to make it feel more focused and easy to follow.

1. 6)  Admissions officers will connect with you because of your imperfections, not in spite of them. Many applicants imagine that they need to present a flawless, picture-perfect version of themselves. In reality, while displaying your strengths and accomplishments, it’s also vital to share a window to your vulnerabilities and the moments of sadness, loss, or disappointment that helped to shape who you are today. The key is to create a presentation that allows the admission office to feel like you’re presenting them with the real you. They can’t know who you are without knowing what you’ve been through.
